What to do when it’s sunny in Melton?

You are spoilt for choice at Exford Waters, with plenty of outdoor and recreational activities close to home.

Picnic along Werribee River

Located on the banks of the Werribee River, Exford Waters provides the perfect base to explore this natural waterway. Known for its extensive birdlife – 190 species call the Werribee River home – the river is also perfect for a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, and boating. Or, relax with the family at one of many Werribee River picnic areas. Our favourites include:

  • Melton Reserve – 4 minutes from Exford Waters
  • Riverbend Historical Park – 31 minutes
  • K Cliffs lookout – 40 minutes
  • Werribee River Park – 48 minutes

Safari at Werribee Zoo

A 40-minute drive from Exford Waters, Werribee Zoo has been a family favourite since it opened in 1983. With a distinct African focus, jump on the Werribee Zoo bus and take a guided tour through the savannah and get up close to giraffes, zebras and rhinoceros.There’s also loads of great keeper talks where you can learn about the conservation efforts of the zoo. Kids up to the age of 15 are free on weekends and holidays, making it a great day out for the whole family. Werribee Zoo is located on K Road, Werribee South.

Hike in Lederberg National Park

Take a 25-minute drive to the Great Dividing Range and explore the natural surrounds of Lerderderg River. The track between McKenzie’s Flat and Graham’s Dam is an easy hour return walk and suitable for kids of all ages, with plenty of opportunity to explore the river. There are also picnic facilities at McKenzie’s Flat, including BBQs, making it a great base to spend the day.

Visit the Animal Land children’s farm

Located 28 minutes drive away in Diggers Rest, Animal Land Children’s Farm offers a unique farm experience. Guests can help milk cows, collect eggs or feed the farm animals, creating cherished memories for kids. The farm is open Friday to Monday from 10am-3pm with last entry at 12.30pm.

Explore the local parks

The convenience of a masterplanned community means everything you need is at your doorstep. Little ones will love exploring the local playgrounds within Exford Waters, including Central Reserve Park and Embleton Chase Reserve. Future sporting fields will also soon grace this vibrant community, inviting you to grab a ball and relish an afternoon of football or cricket.

Need to find an activity indoors? There’s plenty of wet-weather activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Family Games Night

Head down to Xplosions Bar and Bowl, just 13-minutes from Exford Waters for a family afternoon of 10-pin bowls and arcade games. With a fully licensed bar and cafe, this is the perfect spot to escape the rain and have some fun together. Ramp up the fun with ‘Cosmic Bowling’ on Friday and Saturday nights, complete with neon lights and music. Xplosions Bar and Bowl is 1/25 Bakery Square, Melton. Opening hours are 10am-10pm Sunday-Thursday, and 10am-1am on Friday and Saturdays.

Bounce the day away

Jump your way through a rainy day at Flip Out Derrimut, just 26 minutes from Melton. With wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, and an obstacle course, this indoor park is perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages. They also offer special toddler sessions so even the little ones can join in on the fun. Flip Out Derrimut is located at 2/21 Elgar Drive, Derrimut. Opening hours are 9.30-6pm weekdays, and open til 9pm Fridays, 8pm Saturdays and 7pm Sundays.

Take in a movie

Check out the latest blockbuster at Reading Cinemas Melton with session times starting at 11am. Conveniently located within Woodgrove Shopping Centre, just 12-minutes drive away, settle in for a cosy day of watching your favourite films together. Every Wednesday the cinema also holds Baby’s Day Out sessions, with free entry to two children under the age of 5 years when accompanied by a paying adult.

Not only does the library have a great array of books to borrow, but it also holds regular free classes and programs for kids (and adults!) of all ages. DIY at Bunnings, Melton

Need another excuse to head down to Bunnings Melton? Each weekend, Bunnings host free kids DIY Workshops for little ones aged between 3-12 years old. There, they’ll make creative projects like toolboxes, toy trucks, planter boxes and painting, with a different theme each week. Check out the store’s website page for sessions, and don’t forget to grab a sausage sandwich to support local community groups on the way out!
